Drama: Flower Boy Next Door

This is the last Asian drama I watched and that was a few months ago. I haven’t felt like watching a drama for a long time, actually, but this one got my attention. For the first time, I think it was the main girl’s personality what made me like this. She was different from most drama girls and it was refreshing. The guys were nice and funny too. You will die out of love when you hear the words “Papua New Guinea”. No idea about what I’m saying? Then watch it 🙂

General Information:

  • Genre: romance, comedy
  • Country: South Korea
  • Year: 2013
  • Episodes: 16
  • Main casting: Park Shin Hye, Yoon Shi Yoon and Kim Ji Hoon
  • Watch online on: viki and hulu (not sure if it works because it is not available in my region)

Synopsis:

Go Dok Mi is a very shy and quiet girl who prefers staying at home and not talking to people as if she were afraid of the world. Even her job as an editor allows her to work at home. His very good looking neighbor (Tae Joon) lives in the building across of hers and peeping on him through the window has become a habit. She even bears some feelings for him.

Her other two neighbors (Oh Jin Rak and Oh Dong Hoon) live in the same building as her. They are webtoon artists, but their last work didn’t go well since it is believed to be a plagiary. Then Oh Jin Rak, who happens to like his strange neighbor, starts to write a comic based on her.

When Enrique Geum (a video game designer) leaves Spain to return to Korea after a very long time and starts living with his old friend Tae Joon, Go Dok Mi’s hermit-like life will start to crumble as the men around her will start to show their interest for her. Can she cope with that much attention?

The best:

  • Listening to Enrique talking in Spanish made my day. It’s very funny. Even listening how the other characters pronounce his name is hilarious.
  • If you are looking for a cute story with cute characters, you should watch this. Enrique and Oh Dong Hoon are particularly cute.
  • Oh Dong Hoon and his side love story with his boss. They make a very cute couple, although we don’t get to see much of this. I was disappointed because I wanted more, but I understand the drama was not about them.
  • Go Dok Mi is different from other female leads, which is refreshing.
  • Park Shin Hye seems to be a good actress. She can play the role of a strange girl and switch to a typical drama girl the next as in Heartstrigs, for example.

The worst:

  • I like Go Dok Mi’s character (I think it’s because I can relate to her), but I believe that some people can be annoyed by her. I do feel the antagonist girl will be far more annoying to everyone, though.
  • Not as much Oh Dong Hoon as I would like. He was just too cute.
  • In case you want a complicated plot, this is not what you are looking for.

Score:

8 out of 10. It was pretty funny and cute and I could relate to the main girl lead (but that’s just me, I guess).

If you liked Flower Boy Next Door, you have to check out Dream High (if you haven’t already), they are both awesome!
