My friend bought this movie to add it to her “somehow new collection of Asian movies” and I think neither of us was expecting it to be so funny. We’ve watched it like three times now and still laugh with the “peach tree” part. That was a very “wtf” moment. This movie has plenty of “wtf” moments, by the way, but I think most Asian movies do too. Anyway, we always has a really good time watching it. I even have it on DVD too because I found it in a secondhand shop.

General Information

  • Genre: comedy, romance, action, martial arts, historical
  • Country: South Korea
  • Year: 2009
  • Duration: 119 min.
  • Main casting: Kang Dong Won, Yoo Hae Jin and Im Soo Jung.
  • Trailer: youtube

Synopsis

During Joseon dynasty, a magic flute causes a battle between demons and gods. Three Taoist wizards and the greatest ascetics of their time (the Master and Hwadam) are trusted with a part of the flute each. When they find out the Master has been murdered, Woo Chi, his boastful and rascal student, is punished for the crime and trapped in a scroll indefinitely.

When demons start to appear in modern Seoul, chaos arises. The wizards have no other option than to come out of their peaceful lives and release Woo Chi so he can save the world. However, Woo Chi seems more interested in sightseeing than in the battle and he even finds a woman who looks like the one he liked hundreds of years ago. Will Woo Chi save the world or not?

The best:

  • It’s very funny and enjoyable.
  • Good story, but a bit weird as any other Asian movie (some “wtf” moments).
  • Action scenes were pretty good considering this is an Asian movie and in Asian movies action scenes tend to be very fake.

The worst:

  • Nothing to complain about except that it may be a bit confusing sometimes.

Score:

8’5 out of 10. I enjoyed it a lot, but I feel it could have been a bit better.

haha That’s the same feeling I got while watching the movie, like “wtf is this, but who cares? It’s funny”. Just watch it! Actually, I have it on DVD because I founded in a second hand shop ^^
