Manga: Shinobi Life

8 May

shinobi_lifeI started to read this long ago, when it wasn’t finished yet. I had to stop half way through the story and since then I’ve been checking from time to time to see if it had been finished. Finally, I got to read the entire story and I enjoyed it. I love ninja stories, by the way, so I have a couple of other ninja manga that I want to reread and review. Anyway,  go and read the rest of the review!

Synopsis:

In the past, Kagetora, a shinobi who has sworn to protect princess Beni, falls down from a cliff  in the middle of a fight and disappears.

In the present, Beni, the daughter of a very rich man, is so used to being kidnapped that she isn’t even scared of the kidnapper who is threatening her on a rooftop.

Just then, Kagetora falls from the sky. He thinks he is being tricked by the enemy through illusions and mistakes Beni for princess Beni since they look alike and saves her. After that, he sticks to her, and even if she first thought he was just a cosplayer, she ends up hiring him as her bodyguard.

Soon after, as they are dealing with the new found feelings for each other, Beni learns that Kagetora is actually a ninja from the past and that there is another shinobi in town who is seeking for revenge.

Is Beni only a princess Beni replacement for Kagetora? Will the fact that her father has arranged a marriage for her change her relationship with Kagetora? Why is her father so mean to her? Why is the other shinobi seeking for revenge?

Art:

Very simple, specially for a shojo. It’s particularly noticeable in the characters’ eyes. The art was still good, though. It’s good to change from time to time. I love all the designs.

Characters:

Kagetora is serious, honorable, sweet and funny when he doesn’t understand the future. I think he lacks a bit of personality sometimes, but it didn’t bother me. It is just a feeling more than a fact.

Beni was a good character too. She wasn’t stupid or annoying, but a bit angry and ironic.

Hitaki, the ninja seeking revenge, was one of my favorite characters because he has a very good story to tell. The main story really revolves around his.

The best:

  • Hitaki’s story and Hitaki in general 😀
  • Time travelling. Come on! That’s awesome! But it is more awesome how everything was connected at the end by… fate? The author did a good job here.
  • Some really good plot twists. I love the one about Beni’s father.
  • There is not really a love triangle… but is that good or bad? Depends on your mood, I guess.

The worst:

  • Kagetora and Beni starts to like each other just because, so I cannot feel the real reason why they love each other. That matter is a bit underdeveloped.
  • How does the time travelling thing work? Supposedly you can’t chose where (or better said “when”) you land on, so for a few chapters we see characters struggling to get where they need. But sometimes they just end wherever they need to be right away. Probably the answer is fate… again. I think I’m reading too much into this, anyway. It wasn’t that bad at all.

Score:

8 out of 10. What really bother me is not understanding why they both love each other so much. Well, Kagetora has his reasons, but not Beni.

Quotes:

These are some of the quotes I picked from the manga. If you know more, please say so to include them here.

“Don’t forget that there is always someone out there who is stronger.” -Rihito.

“Even if my bones are shattered to pieces, I will protect you.” -Kagetora.

“Throw away your conscience. If you don’t, one day you’ll be crushed by those shitty feelings.” -Hitaki.

“Stay here together… with me. Until morning.” -Beni.

“If only I didn’t want something, I wouldn’t have lost it.” -Rihito.

“Come prepare to lose your life, Hitaki. I will forget that we were ever friends.” -Kagetora

“As a shinobi, being caught by the enemy and switching sides is unacceptable. It’s obvious that Shirousa would choose death.” Renkaku

“If the sun rises and it’ll be bright again, you’ll be able to see everything, even things you rather not. I wish tomorrow never comes.” -Hitaki

“I haven’t lied. I’ve just stayed silent.” -Renkaku

“Just because you don’t love me back, it doesn’t mean I can stop loving you.” -Rihito

“A mistake is nothing to be ashamed of. It’s a grater shame to not devote yourself for your goals.” -Shirousa.
