Drama: Dream High

14 May

I remember when I was watching this drama with my best friend. We even tried to see it together when I went to London for one month even if we were in different countries at the moment. It didn’t really work, but the thing is, I was pretty hooked. I even watched it a second time, although it wasn’t as exciting as the first time.  Another thing about this drama is that I met Taec Yeon and Woo Young in it and later on I became a 2pm fan (although nowadays I’m not really a kpop fan anymore). Anyway, it’s a very good one and actually it’s kind of famous. There is even a sequel, but I haven’t watch it yet. I’l be surprised if you haven’t heard about Dream High.

General Information:

  • Genre: romance, drama
  • Country: South Korea
  • Year: 2011
  • Episodes: 16
  • Sequel: Dream High 2
  • Main casting: Ok Taec Yeon, Kim Soo Hyun, Suzy, Jang Woo Young, IU, Ham Eun Jung
  • Watch online on: gooddrama.net

Hye Mi wants to major in classic music, for which she has been preparing for years. However, she has to give up her dream as she is forced to enter Kirin Arts High School to become an idol and pay off her dad’s debts. She fails the entrance casting, though, but she manages to make a deal: if she can convince two other boys to enter the school, she can enroll too. Song Sam Dong is a countryside boy who’s only interested in making her mother happy while Jin Gook is a troublesome boy she accidentally meets while she was running away from loan sharks.

Once they are all in the school, Hye Min has to face the shame of being in a class for special students -meaning not good enough students- and deal with her ex best friend, who she betrayed and since has become her rival. However, she will learn a lot in the school and make friends with Pil Suk, a girl who is an outcast for being fat, and Jason, a talented student with a good heart.

And, of course, she falls in love.

Will everybody achieve their goals as they, you know, dream high?

Hye Mi is not your typical drama female lead. She is mean, cunning and proud, but she has a good reason to be like that: an indebted and absent father and a little sister to take care of. That’s why she does everything it takes to help her sister, even if it is betraying her best friend and making everyone think she is as bad as she seems. This doesn’t mean she’s an angel on the inside, though. I really despised her character. She could have seek the help of her friends, but she was too stubborn. Even though, I reckon she is an unusual character, which is fresh, and I understand her motives.

About the other characters,  I don’t really remember much. I fell in love with the three male leads, I liked Pil Suk’s character and had mixed feelings for Hye Min ex best friend. I also loved their teacher, played by no other than J.W. Park himself.

The best:

  • Ok Taec Yeon, Kim Soo Hyun and Jang Woo Young ♥♥♥
  • J. W. Park. Come on! This guy is as awesome as his face! 😀
  • The plot was good, but maybe a bit off some times.
  • Different female leads. Most are strong willed characters.
  • I love the songs.
  • Pil Suk and Jason’s love story. So adorable! I think I even like it more than the story between the leads.

The worst:

  • I despised Suzy’s role here. Seriously… But there wouldn’t be a drama without her.
  • Why does Pil Suk have to change her body to be successful? While I admire her will to change, there is still something too materialistic about it…
  • I remember thinking the end was a bit off, but I don’t really remember now.

8 out of 10.  I really recommend to every drama fan to watch this one, which I believe was pretty popular a few years ago.

I just watched dream high for the first time a few months ago and I really enjoyed it! It was certainly a fun and enjoyable watch. While not perfect, I loved the coming of age story and how the music was incorporated into the show. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

I forgot about the upcoming of age theme! It’s been three years since I watched this, though I still listen to the music xDD There is a birthday song, actually 🙂

I’ve just added something about Pil Suk and Jason, btw.

Thanks to you for your comment 🙂
