Manga: Love Monster

17 May

112555Guess what? Yes! This is about tengus or, well, crow demons. But Love Monster has many flaws, so I don’t really recommend it unless you are up for a stupid female lead and dumb humor all the time… Anyway, I know. I should review a different kind of story, so next time I want to read a school shojo manga. Any suggestions?

Synopsis:

Hiyo Osora has failed the entrance exams for all her high schools of choice. When she goes back home upset, her mother hands her an acceptance letter from SM School, but she is sure she never applied nor did she take the exams for this school she has never heard 0f before! It turns out her almost absent father has pulled some strings to enroll her daughter there for some reason.

Not having much of a choice, Hiyo has to attend SM School, but… the school is not what she is expecting at all! Every single student is a monster! Morever, somehow she is engaged to Kurou, the student president?

Does she really have to get marry to such an abusive boy? Can she cope up with being the only human among monsters of all types? Or is there more to her than it meets the eye?

Art:

It was nothing special. Particularly, I think the boys’ chins are too pointy, but otherwise it was fine.

Characters:

Hiyo is as dumb as a rock. Seriously, what an annoying girl. She does nothing in the entire story; there is not character development. She is there just to be pushed around by the boys and the enemies and be an idiot. I understand that she is the main comic relief provider in the story, but you can be funny without being a nuisance. As an example, her love for cute small animals often puts her in a troublesome situation, which could have been avoided easily by running away from the mean looking character. Duh. Dumb, dumb, dumb.

Kurou is a bit of a perv (notice this is a smut shojo) and a bit abusive. He is totally in love with Hiyo to the point of arranging a marriage without her consent (no matter his reasons, it was still without her consent). He’s a strong crow demon and everybody admires him. He has problems with his family and he usually ignores them except for his grandfather. As a character, let’s say it has more personality than Hiyo, which it is not difficult. There could have been more character development for him too, though.

The best:

  • A school where everybody is a monster? How cool is that?
  • Actually, the main plot is a very good one and it gets serious in the end.

The worst:

  • So the story gets serious in the end, great, but the rest o the time is just dumb talk mostly. Hiyo being dumb, Kurou being abusive, a new villain showing almost in every chapter until it gets boring… If the story would have being about the main plot, it would have been a very good one (and way shorter), but instead it gets overshadowed by the filler subplots.

Score:

5 out of 10 because a good story was almost born.

Quotes:

You know, if you have more quotes, send them to me! By the way, the quotes can contain spoilers, so read at your own risk.

“Now you are in this school, show your true self. You don’t need to hide your true identity.” -Kurou.

“Wait until the time you can fly. Then I’ll tell you.” -Kurou.

“White wings will call the demons to her.”

“In my opinion, you look more delicious.” -Ken Yamata.

“What do you mean I am yours? I’m not your belongings.” -Hiyo.

“My wings appeared after I met you. I am willing to give it all up for you anytime. Not only my wings… I’d be willing to give up everything for you.” -Kurou.

“My school has lots of gardens and the food’s delicious, but most of all, my friends and the teachers are just so much fun!” -Hiyo.

“Listen, papa, when Hiyo grows up, she’s going to be Kurou-kun’s bride.” -Hiyo.

“That’s right. I’m strong enough to make your dreams come true.” -Kurou.

“We always want to see the smiles of those who burden us.” -Hiyo.

“I have to become stronger to protect her.” -Kurou.

“You are neither pretty nor cute, but when I’m with you… how do I say this… I feel happy whenever I’m with you.” -Haine.

Oh, thank you very much! That’s a long list. I’ll sure look into it. But which one would you say have a darker story? I love dark stories the most xD But with happy endings, please xD I’ll have a look at your blog later 🙂

A darker story? I think most of those that I mentioned aren’t of the ‘dark’ genre, more to the comedy, shoujo light hearted type. If you want a dark shoujo school life story, I recommend Dengeki Daisy.

But if you want a dark shoujo story that isn’t necessarily under ‘school life’ maybe you can try Black Bird and Bokura No Koi Wa Shi Ni Itaru Yamai No You De. Both are pretty good with the latter being the darker one. And it isn’t completed yet so whether it has a happy ending, we don’t know yet.

Also, you can read Vampire Knight if you haven’t read it yet, it’s quite a dark story but I think the ending can be happy or sad depending on how you want to view it.

Lastly, I’d like to recommend Koizora, which isn’t a dark story but it’s of school life shoujo genres and it’s a rather serious manga that’s very sweet.

        I hope these helped! ^^

Oh, Black Bird! I’ve been waiting for a long time for it to be finished and now it is, but not online u.u I’m waiting for Dengeki Daisy too. I also want to read Vampire Knight once classes are finished. i don’t know the other ones, so I’ll search for information, but I’ve heard of Koizora.
I started to read Moe Kare!! this morning because you recommended it and I like it so far, so thanks 🙂

Yup, Dengeki Daisy and Black Bird aren’t completed yet even though the originals in Japan are already far ahead. Vampire Knight is completed for sure, you can peruse that one without worrying about waiting for more chapters 🙂

        You’re most welcome! ^^
