Manga: From Far Away / Kanata Kara

25 May

coverI think this manga is underrated because everything is really good, but it’s not famous. It was one of the first fantasy manga to really fascinate me! Maybe at first the old fashion drawing was a bit of a turn off, but then I learnt to like it. I want to read more stories like this. Please, please, please read this manga ūüôā

Synopsis:

Noriko is an average girl who suddenly finds herself in another world where strange worm-like creatures attack her, but she is saved by a powerful man named Izark. Noriko, afraid of her knew situation, clings to him like a nestling to its mother, deciding that she doesn’t need further¬†proof to fully trust him.

However, Izark doesn’t just happen to be there at the right moment at the right time. He has been looking for something called “the awakening” to kill it before the world turns upside down.

What will happen when he realizes that the awakening is no other than the innocent looking girl he has just saved? Where does all Izark’s superhuman powers come from? Will they destroy the world like sheers have said?

Art:

Old fashion, but nice to look at. It may take you a few chapters to get used to it, but otherwise it’s fine. I love how Noriko’s hair grows.

Characters:

Noriko is one of the few average school students who goes to another world that doesn’t bother me. She is, in fact, a really good character as she really manages to convey her role. She does what normal people would do in her situation. She doesn’t meddle¬†in matters she doesn’t understand, she doesn’t cause trouble for the other characters that are trying to do their work… but she tries to help when she can. Actually, she is pretty silent -we mostly read her thoughts more often than her speeches- and it is stated at the beginning of the story that she is quite spaced out, which I love. It reminds me of me ūüėÄ But she is not weak; she just sticks to what she knows she can do and sometimes she shows her character is stronger and more determined than it seems, which I love too.

Izark is a more cliche character, but not to the point that¬†it’s bothersome. He is actually a nice character, strong, silent, serious… but later on he let us see a more teasing and funny side to him, specially when he is with Noriko or¬†Alef.¬†I should mention that he starts being more cheerful when he thinks there may be hope, so the little changes on him are not actually out of the blue.

There is a really big group of secondary characters, all of them really good. The author manages to give them all their time to shine.

The best:

  • The female lead. Seriously, very realistic and likable. This only happens once in a while, when the planets are lined or something.
  • The plot is fairly good developed, specially the¬†countries political struggles.
  • Noriko actually has to learn the language of this new world. We see her struggle to learn and talk and making mistakes until she manages to be fluent in a fair amount of time.
  • Really good end.
  • There is not really a love triangle, which can be good or bad depending on your mood.

The worst:

  • Complains? I don’t have any. Just if you want a very passionate love story, this is not for you since there are not a lot of romantic scenes in this manga, but the rest of it makes up for it.

Score:

9’5 out of 10. I’d like to give it a 10, but because of its lacking of romantic scenes and given that this is a shojo, I can’t.

Quotes:

I love quotes, so if you have more, please say so to include them here :). There may be spoilers, so beware.

When I was chatting with my girl friends, I had no idea what was going to happen to me…” -Noriko.

“It’s not a dream. This is real. What happened before was real.” -Noriko.

“Dad, I’m in the kind of world you write about in your novels. You can skip ahead to see what’s gonna happen in the end when you’re reading a book, but‚Ķ what I see ahead of me is total darkness and I have no idea where I’m going.” Noriko.

“If this girl is the real awakening, I’ll have to kill her.” -Izark.

“I must¬†be nuts. What am I rescuing her?” -Izark.

“I knew I’d be useless, so I stayed hidden.” -Noriko.

“It was peaceful here, even though I was riding an emotional roller-coaster.” -Noriko.

“I don’t believe in an unyielding future.” -Zena.

“So no matter how minor they may be, solving the problems that lie in my path will be my mission.” -Zena.

“I felt his pain, but I didn’t know what to do.” -Noriko.

“There are so many different kinds of people leading so many different lives in so many different places. I never knew. And I am just one of them.” -Mr. Jeida.

“Such a dashing warrior on the outside, but such an old woman penny-pincher inside. It’s almost frightening.” -Alef.

“I believe that the world of light exists in the core of our being.” -Dr. Lairgeeta.
